Coastlines : Exploring coastal scenes: sea, beach, rocks, and figures with David Bannister

One-day workshop, £75 (Students will need to bring materials
Bring the beauty of the shoreline to life in this hands-on, beginner-to-intermediate painting workshop. You will learn step-by-step how to blend a sweeping sea and sky, use palette knives to create textured rock formations, and realistically add boats and figures to your scene. By the end of the class, you will walk away with a completed, vibrant coastal scene with better understanding of the process of building a dynamic seascape.

Materials required:
- A surface to paint on- canvas, canvas board or heavy watercolour paper; no smaller than A4.
- Standing or desktop easel.
- Sketchbook- paper of good weight to accept water and paint. Heavy weight cartridge or mixed media paper is best.
- Palette. There will also be disposable palettes available for mixing paint
- Brushes – please bring various sizes- preferably long handled. Bristle or artificial haired brushes are acceptable.
- Palette Knife – various shapes. Alternatively bring an old credit card or flexible filler scraper.
- Acrylic colours – Minimum required- red, blue and yellow, white, black. Here is a good starter selection of colours that will offer a wide palette for most work: Titanium White – Ultramarine Blue – Cerulean Blue – Cadmium Red – Magenta – Cadmium Yellow – Lemon Yellow – Viridian – Burnt Sienna – Raw Umber- Ivory Black. Student quality paints are acceptable.
- Kitchen Towelling or cotton rags.
- Containers – 2 small jars or dippers for your water.
- Latex Gloves – optional
- Photographic reference or digital image to work from. Please choose an image that has all of the features we are going to explore.
Provided:
There will only be a limited number of desktop easels available, so it is recommended that students bring their own.
There will be various acrylic mediums available to use.
